Richard George Payne, born in Burlington, Vermont, May 2, 1937 to Irene (Fennell) Payne and Harold Payne. Dick grew up in Bridport, Vermont on the family farm. He attended Northfield-Mt. Hermon School in Massachusetts and graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York in 1959. He taught English at Shoreham High School in Shoreham, Vermont, and then worked with his brother on the family dairy farm in Bridport. He was later employed at Job Corps in Vergennes, Vermont. In 1992, he married Carla Thomas and moved to East Cabot, Vermont. He was employed as a para-educator at Barre Town School for a number of years. In his retirement, Dick was active with the Mt. Sinai Shriners in Barre and in the local community theatre and he also volunteered with the Twin Valley Senior Center. He served as a representative from Cabot to the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission for many years.
Dick is survived by his wife, Carla Payne of East Cabot; stepchildren, David Thomas (Lu) of Plainfield, Vermont and Jessica Salinas-Thomas of Revere, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Jakob, Liorah, Ernesto, Juan Pablo, Nicole, Jenna and Maria; his brother, Edward B. Payne and sister-in-law, Rosemary Payne; nephews, Harold, Charles and Arthur and their families; friends and neighbors.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at the East Cabot Cemetery on Mack Mountain Road. Friends and neighbors will be welcome at the family home at 1554 US Route 2 in East Cabot following the service from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
