Margery Sable Obituary

Margery Ann Shefrin, 77, passed away with her children by her side on Friday February 11, 2022. She was born on August 12, 1944 in Women’s Hospital in Manhattan, NYC to Barnetta Shirley Sable and Sidney Woodrow Shefrin. She later changed her name to Margery Sable to honor her mother’s maiden name. She attended Lynbrook High School in Lynbrook, NY and then went on to receive her Bachelors and Masters in Education from Queens College, City of NY. She taught Social Studies at Valley Stream North High School from 1966-1971. After marrying John Walter des Groseilliers and starting a family they moved to Hardwick, Vermont where they purchased a funeral home. Soon after moving to Vermont she earned her Vermont Funeral Directors License and enjoyed connecting with the community. In 1980, she returned to teaching at a k-12 school in Cabot, Vermont. She taught Social Studies there from 1980-1986 and then went on to be the principal of the school from 1986-1996. Marge earned her PhD. in Education Leadership and Policy from the University of Vermont in 1998. During her time at Cabot she was a passionate educator and worked hard with a quality staff to achieve a high standard of education for all students.

After divorcing she moved to Washington DC and worked at the National Center for Education and Economy reforming schools Nationwide from 1996-2006. Afterwards, she was Superintendent in a suburban school outside Pittsburgh, PA and finished her career as a trainer of Principals and Superintendents at the National Institute of School Leadership. Driven by
her independence, honesty, and compassion, Marge was known for bringing class and grace into her profession. She had the unique ability to help people realize their own potential. In 2008 she moved to the Chicagoland area to take on her next chapter as a Granny and spent her time with her children and grandchildren in both Chicago and Vermont. Above all else she loved her family and friends fiercely.

She is survived by her daughter Jennifer des Groseilliers (Monique Maye) and their children: Crosby, Douglas and Riley; her son Douglas des Groseilliers (Nicole des Groseilliers) and their children: Abigail, Daniel and Julia, her sister Ethel Jesse Shefrin (Stephanie Perrin). Many Cousins and Dear Friends. She was predeceased by her parents and youngest sister Ronnie Inez Shefrin.
