Joyce S. Greene, 76, died at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on January 3rd, 2026, from complications following surgery.
Joyce was born in Alexandria, VA, on March 10, 1949, the daughter of Joseph D. Salmon and Mary (Corker) Salmon, former residents of South Burlington. She graduated from Derby Academy in 1967, and Trinity College in Burlington in 1971. Joyce was a gifted student with an excellent memory and strong work ethic. She was the valedictorian of both her high school and college classes. She attended graduate school in English Literature at Syracuse University and studied accounting at the University of Vermont. Joyce became a Certified Public Accountant in 1983. She worked at various companies including National Life Insurance Company in Montpellier and Kingstone Insurance Company in Kingston, NY. Invariably excelling, Joyce became the go-to person to solve any troublesome accounting issue wherever she was employed.
Joyce was a poet who specialized in Tanka, a five-line short form that originated in Japan. She excelled at the genre, winning several awards. Her Tanka appeared in Ribbons and was published by the Tanka Society of America in Gusts: Contemporary Tanka, and Tanka Canada among other journals and anthologies.
While studying at Syracuse, Joyce met Harold Statts Walker III, whom she married in 1972. They had a son; Harold Statts Walker IV (Hal) and the marriage later ended in divorce.
Joyce married Thomas M. Greene of Montpelier on October 4, 1986. During their marriage of 39 years, Joyce and Tom lived in Montpelier and Essex, VT, NM, VA, Poughkeepsie, NY and Lyndonville, VT.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Tom, her son Hal and his partner Michelle Carry and their son, Dylan F. Walker of New York City, her sister Marylynn Salmon and her husband Joseph O’Rourke of Skokie, IL, and her brother Michael D. Salmon and his wife Linda of Milton, VT.
A service in her honor will be held at the East Peacham Baptist Church, details to be announced, and burial in the Spring at Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier.
