Joseph L. Berg (Leo) of West Danville, VT was an exceptional man; calm and steady, good hearted and kind with a great love for family. He enjoyed telling interesting, long-winded, often questionable stories. He appreciated many genres of music, the theater, good food and was a voracious reader. He was wise, sometimes funny, and once in a while irritating because he liked to play devil’s advocate and challenge others during discussions. Leo was a closet romantic, a city boy ending up in rural Vermont because of love. He was protective of those he cared for and would not tolerate unkindness.
Leo’s inclination to care for others led him to work in the healthcare field and later in life spent a decade traveling throughout the United States working on a national health project.
Leo passed from this life on November 16, 2021, at home with loved ones nearby. He was born in Lowell, MA, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1967, serving in Vietnam, and afterwards served in the Rhode Island National Guard. Leo’s first life was spent in Rhode Island, his second in Vermont, where he merely tolerated the cold and snow; although he did love watching the flocks of wild turkeys march across the yard, listening to the loons on Joe’s Pond and spent too much time worrying about the bears on his back porch.
Leo was predeceased by his son Jeffry J. Berg. He is survived by his wife Lynda Markison, sisters Cathy Tudino and Rachelle Breault of Rhode Island, a son Jason Berg and daughter Elizabeth Markison. He was much loved by those who truly knew him.
“The purpose of life is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well”
