Jeanne Bernek Obituary

Jeanne (Charlebois) Bernek died peacefully on October 29, 2024 surrounded by family, at the home of her daughter Judy, in Lighthouse Point, FL.

An elegant and beautiful woman, Jeanne always looked younger than her years in her youthful  stylish outfits. As a wife and life partner to her husband Evan (John), Jeanne cherished times  with her family. She was a devoted mother to her 3 daughters, a loving grandmother to 6  grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Jeanne valued hard work and education and loved  and believed in young people.

She was born in Weybridge, VT to Oliver and Clara (Pomanville) Charlebois on November 14,1929, the fifth child of nine. Her childhood memories were of growing up in Addison, VT on the family dairy farm. As a young girl Jeanne worked waitressing in Vergennes, VT where she met her future husband. Jeanne married Evan “John” Bernek on Jun 12, 1949 and together they relocated to Schenectady, NY where she worked at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory as an admin assistant. In August of 1951 their first daughter Linda was born and before their second daughter Judy was born in 1953, they had moved to John’s hometown of Springfield, VT to be close to family. In 1958 John had a career opportunity and the family moved north to  Middlebury, VT where their last daughter Deanna was born in 1959. In 1961 Jeanne began her career with the Bell Telephone Company located in Middlebury where the family lived for 17 years. Jeanne continued with Bell in the different locations where they lived, ending in Spartanburg, SC when she retired in 1975.

In 1976 Jeanne and John moved back to VT and bought the Marshfield Village Store, where  they ran a successful, authentic general store for 28 years. In 2008 when John died after a  long illness, Jeanne decided to enroll in Community College of VT and 2 years later, at the age  of 81 was awarded an associates business degree. Later that year Jeanne relocated to Lighthouse Point, FL to be near her daughter, Judy. For her last 13 years Jeanne lived at “The  Lighthouse Colony” on the intracoastal waterway where she made many friends and was an active member on the board of directors. Jeanne also became an artist and produced many beautiful oil paintings, and continued to play the piano.

Jeanne is survived by her daughters; Judy Vinson (Curt) of Lighthouse Point, FL, Deanna Martin (Jeff) of Plainfield, VT, Grandchildren: Jeffrey Martel, Kelly McKenney (Thomas), Tad Davis (Haley), Heather Guptill (Alden), Kate Martin (Josh), Betsy Martin, Great-grandchildren: Devon McKenney, Faye Davis, Gwen Davis, Teddy Davis, Lacey Guptill, Maxine Guptill, Georgiana Guptill, Silas Lockwood, Maya Lockwood.
