Hildegard Wegner, age 89, of Woodbury, Vermont, entered into her eternal rest in heaven on December 27th, 2023.
She was born on November 9th, 1934 in Riga, Latvia to parents, Josef and Helene Erhardt, and was the eldest and only girl of six children. She spent the first five years of her childhood in Latvia, but the family then was forced to flee when World War Two came too close to their homeland. They eventually settled in Duisburg, Germany and she went to vocational school at age 16 to become a secretary. She worked for Mercedes Benz and met the love of her life, Werner Wegner, there. They were married in Duisburg on July 16th, 1955, and subsequently emigrated to the United States in October 1956, starting their family and establishing a successful automobile business in Greenwich, Connecticut, where they lived for 30 years. They also enjoyed their vacation home in Colington Harbor, NC, for several years, and built a home in Woodbury, Vermont, where they retired to in 1993. They made Vermont their home where she remained after his passing in 2003. She cherished the beauty of the woods and the peace she found in nature.
She was an avid baker and loved surprising her family and friends with amazing creations to enjoy. She was a devout Christian and member of the Cabot United Church, serving as a lay deacon and member of the church council. She was also a frequent attendee of the local Senior Center, taking Tai Chi lessons and eventually becoming certified as an instructor, to the delight of her students. One of Hildegard’s greatest pleasures was being a grandmother and great-grandmother, who affectionately referred to her as “Grandma in the Woods” and “Gigi”.
Hildegard, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Marion and Edward Schloemer of Wilmington, NC, Margaret and Jeffrey Miller of Sorrento, FL, and Carol and Edward DeVito, of Ridgefield, CT, grandchildren Elizabeth Schloemer, Alison (nee Schloemer) and Matthew Wilkinson, Bryan and Dustin Miller, Melissa Miller, Julia DeVito and Eric Mercado , Michael DeVito, Bradley and Shea DeVito, great grandchildren, Brynn, Henry and Bennett Wilkinson, Gabriela Miller, and her siblings, Johannes Erhardt, Henri Erhardt, Helmut Erhardt. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Werner Wegner, and her siblings, Eric Erhardt, Ulrich Erhardt.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on January 13th, 2024 at the Cabot United Church, followed by a graveside service at Hope Cemetery in Barre.
