David Kelly, Jr.

David Kelly, Jr., of Dallas, TX and Greensboro, VT died peacefully at home in Dallas on June 16, 2020 at the age of 91. He was born in New York City on December 16, 1928, son of David Kelly and Katharine Houghton Kelly and the stepson of Marion Thompson Griffiths Hackenson Kelly and Gaynor Brand Hewitt Kelly. He graduated from Williams College in 1950 and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Infantry during the Korean War. He grew up in Madison, NJ and lived in Avon, CT after his military service until he moved with his family to Dallas in 1971. His grandfather, William P. Kelly, was the first family member to spend summer vacations in Greensboro, VT. David was a certified public accountant with Ernst and Ernst in Hartford, CT. In 1962, he joined the Lomas and Nettleton Company in New Haven, CT. He retired in 1989 as an executive vice president of Lomas Financial Corporation. During his career, he was active in mortgage banking industry affairs and served on the Board of Governors of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America. He was a member of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church of Dallas and the United Church of Christ of Greensboro, VT. He served as president of the Greensboro Association from 1993-1994. He was a member of Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas for over 30 years. In 1959 he married the late Mary "Polly" Woodford Potter, who died in 1998. In 1999 he married Evangeline Sullivan Wade. He is survived by his wife, Evangeline, a son, Seth Thomas Kelly (Elizabeth) of Dallas, two daughters, Katharine Houghton Kelly Lindauer (Steven) of Castle Rock, CO, and Kimberly Potter Kelly Bartlett of Portland, OR, and 10 grandchildren; his step-children Elizabeth Wade Fecteau (Tim), William Groat Wade (Robin) and Catherine Sullivan Hebert (Fred) and nine step-grandchildren. And he is also survived by his brother Dana Kimball Kelly, his stepbrother Peter Griffiths Kelly and stepsister, Ellen Hixon. In addition to his long business career which provided for his family, David was a master at words, numbers, strength and patience. He was a problem solver, including crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, and could lose himself in a book. When he retired, he built a doll house for his first wife Polly that was an exact reproduction of his ancestors' Colonial home in Newport, RI, complete with every architectural detail in miniature. When vacationing in Vermont, he loved sailing on his beloved Caspian Lake or playing on the nine-hole golf course with just a few clubs. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and his wisdom imparted to his children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the United Church of Christ in Greensboro, VT, the Greensboro Free Library, or VNA Hospice and Palliative Care. The family would also like to thank Christopher Young for his compassionate care. A private memorial service in Greensboro, VT will be held Saturday, July 25th.
