Charles Raymond Arnold, Sr.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Raymond Arnold, Sr.  He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family on July 12, 2025. 

Chuck was born on November 4, 1937, in Morrisville, Vt., and spent his life dedicated to his homestead and family. 

Shortly after graduating high school from Peoples Academy in 1955, he enlisted in the Army where he served as a Specialist 5th Class T as an Airplane Mechanic.  He spoke often and fondly of the time he spent in France from 1958-1960.  While reminiscing, he beamed with pride and loved showing us the old 8mm film and photos from his time abroad.  He went on to obtain his pilot’s license; one of his proudest achievements.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army, it was of no great surprise that he would go on to continue his work as an auto mechanic.  Chuck spent 25 years at Stowe Auto and then 3 years at Gillen Ford in Morrisville, only retiring per the Dr.’s orders. Easing his way into retirement he spent a few more years at Trapp Family Lodge as a security guard. 

Chuck married Myra Peno on January 5, 1970.  After spending some time in Athol, MA, they ultimately settled and built their home together in Wolcott where they raised 6 children: Melvin Arnold of Wolcott; Linda Cleveland of Pittsfield, VA; Charles Arnold Jr. and wife Kerry-Ann of Wolcott; Shawn Arnold and wife Shelly of Morrisville; and Joanie Smith and husband Sean of East Montpelier. He was predeceased by his daughter, Robin Arnold and his wife, Myra; both of whom he deeply missed.

Chuck also helped care for his grandchildren Briana, Dylan and Morgan Arnold.  He and Morgan shared a strong bond that reflected unconditional love, mutual respect and bridged generations. 

When he wasn’t working on a vehicle, Chuck enjoyed building their home, tending to his vegetable garden and flower beds, hunting, fishing, and always making sure the lawn was well manicured. He also spent a great many hours each summer planting fruit trees and expanding rock walls throughout their property.  Once he was officially retired, he enjoyed spending his days with his grandchildren and going on long car rides with Mom and Joanie. He also enjoyed diving into his ancestry and sharing stories and photos from prior generations that sometimes-spanned multiple centuries.

A stoic man, he faced challenges with remarkable composure. Though emotions were not always openly expressed, actions spoke volumes. Kindness was evident, with a listening ear and practical help offered without being asked. Generosity extended beyond finances, investing time and energy in the well-being of others, sacrificing his own needs. He possessed unwavering integrity, always doing what was right, and living by the principles instilled. Honesty, hard work, and respect for others were core values, leaving a strong moral foundation.

Chuck is survived by his children, brothers Brendan Arnold and Carl Arnold and many beloved grandchildren: Briana, Dylan and Morgan Arnold; Chiara, Catherine, Jacoby and Adeline Smith; Joseph Bowen; Shyanne, Shelby, Ryan and Logan Arnold; Kriston and Natasha, Safiya, Shakira and Charles R. Arnold III, and Kayla Atkinson; and Dakota, Jasmin, Kendra, and Kayla Daigle-Arnold. He was also blessed with many great-grandchildren: Landon, Dylan, Noah and Freya Bowen; Lincoln and Nathan Boynton; Aiden, Isaac and Ethan Arnold; Eli and Owen Reynolds; Hudson Arnold; Cooper Ruetz, Jamie and Callen Morin; Watson Farnham, Raelynn and Ottis Arnold; and Jaxon Teale.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Chuck was also predeceased by his parents Raymond and Grace (Driscoll) Arnold. 

We would like to extend our gratitude to Lamoille Home Health and Hospice for their kindness and support over the last several weeks. 

Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 24 from 5:00-7:00p.m. at des Groseilliers Funeral Home at 97 Church Street, Hardwick.  Graveside services are Saturday, July 26 at 10:00a.m. at Taylor Cemetery, 1004 Gulf Road, Wolcott, VT.
