Arthur Linwood Chase, 83, of Hardwick, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and his favorite feline companion “Simba” on Saturday, April 12, 2025. “Art” was born January 31, 1942, in Hardwick, Vermont to Kenneth and Mary (Marckres) Chase.
Art attended schools in Hardwick graduating from Hardwick Academy in 1961. In 1959 Art met the love of his life, Alice Chouinard, at a dance at Greensboro High School. They married October 19, 1963, at St. Michael’s Church in Greensboro Bend.
Art spent a lifetime serving his community of Hardwick in many different capacities. An original founder of Hardwick Rescue Squad established in 1965, retiring in 2020, a member of the Hardwick Fire Department for 17+ years, Hardwick Police Department for 20+ years and Town Constable.
Art’s work history included working on the Massey Farm in North Greensboro, Trow & Holden and Rouleau's granite sheds in Barre, and he was a staple at Hazen Union School for 37 ½ years. Not being a person to sit still and always providing for his family Art worked for Wakefield Veterinary in Hardwick, Hardwick American Legion Post #7, driving truck, rototilling and brush hogging. After retiring from Hazen Union Art continued to work part time at Green Mountain Technology Forestry Center, and for his son-in-law, Dana, at Gravel Construction.
Art’s first love was his family with whom he spent time traveling in summers when the children were younger, camping at the “camp” on the Massey Farm in North Greensboro then later in life spending time at "the land” in Wolcott. Many wonderful memories were made around the campfire with family, friends, lots of great food, plentiful drinks and competitive card games.
Hunting season, as close to his first love, was something that Art looked forward to all year long. A lifetime of hunting beside his father, family and friends that were like family, in Vermont and 35+ years of hunting in New Hampshire and Maine.
Art and Alice were fortunate to take many memorable trips together. Close to 30 years were spent each fall at Fryeburg Fair in Maine. A tradition that is now being carried on by his children and grandchildren.
Left to cherish Art’s memory is his loving wife of 61 years, Alice, daughter, Brenda (Dana) and son, Denis (Tonia). His most prized possessions were granddaughters Taylor (Jordan) and Leesa (Derek), grandsons Davey and Chase “CJ”, great granddaughter, Emma, great grandsons, Bennett and soon-to-be Baby Richardson.
Art is survived by his sister, Aleta (Chuck), sisters-in-law, Clara and Melody, nephews, Tony, Mike and Levi, nieces, Joanne and Mary.
Art was predeceased by his parents, a treasured brother, Alton, brothers-in-law, Leo Massey and John Akerlind, nephew David Massey and niece Hope Chase.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in Art's name to the Hardwick Rescue Squad, PO Box 837, Hardwick, VT 05843 or Hardwick Fire Department Clothing/Equipment Fund, PO Box 1279, Hardwick, VT 05843.
