Roger LeCours Obituary

HARDWICK-  Roger J. LeCours, 82 of Hardwick, passed away on Wednesday, September 26 after a brief two day illness at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with his entire family at his side.

Roger was born in Hardwick on May 27, 1936  to Anselme and Violette (Dion) LeCours. He attended grade school at Hardwick Center School and graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1954. He received a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Vermont. On December 29, 1962, Roger married Patricia Tucker in Barre, Vermont.

Much of Roger’s career was in journalism working on newspapers in Mt. Kisco, NY, the Burlington Free Press, the Barre Times Argus, The Vermont Catholic Tribune, The Hardwick Gazette, and The Caledonian Record. In the late 1970’s, he founded and published The Hardwickian.

Roger also had a career in education teaching at Lamoille Union High School and Hazen Union School. He also served in library/media positions at Hardwick Elementary, Norwich University and Hazen Union School.  Roger was a licensed real estate broker and served as Moderator at Hardwick Town Meetings for many years.  Roger was a lifelong member of St. Norbert’s Church and was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

One of Roger’s greatest pleasures in life was being a grandfather to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as “Pa”. He was delighted to be surrounded by his family for weekly Sunday night dinners.

Roger is survived by his wife, Patricia LeCours of Hardwick, his children Jeffrey and Molly LeCours of Greensboro Bend and Jennifer and Tim Whitney of Hardwick. He is survived by his grandchildren Christi LeCours of Hardwick, Lindsay and Nicholas LeBlanc of Hardwick, Hayley LeCours of Johnson, Andrew and Mariah Whitney, Adam Whitney and Alyssa Whitney all of Hardwick, as well as step-grandchildren Chelsea Dimick of Milton and Adam and Jessica Dimick of Johnson. He leaves his great-grandchildren Kenley, Lily and Brycen LeBlanc, Jameson Whitney and Anna Aschenbach.

He leaves his siblings Mignonne LeBlanc, Robert (Madeline) LeCours, Lawrence (Nita) LeCours, Leo (Bonnie) LeCours, Annette (Don) Miller, Jacqueline (Robert) Borges, Diane (Emile) Fournier, Paulette (Richard) Bessette, Richard LeCours, Daniel (Gail) LeCours, Michael LeCours, sister-in-law Denise (LeMay) Hark, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Denis, brother-in-law Vincent LeBlanc and his nephew Patrick LeCours.

There will be hours of visitation at the des Groseilliers Funeral Home in Hardwick on Sunday, September 30th from 4-7pm as well as a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Norbert Church in Hardwick on Monday, October 1st at 10am.  A burial at Fairview Cemetery will directly follow mass and a meal will be provided at the St. Norbert Church Hall.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Roger’s memory to the Hardwick Rescue Squad.  Please visit dgfunerals.com to send online condolences and see detailed service information.
